Why B.S.I?
Barbering is the oldest, most well respected profession in the history of man. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the barber, hair stylist and cosmetology sector is expected to continue to grow through 2014. In addition, there are also many long-established barbers who will be retiring in the next 10 years which provides a lot of potential for new barbers entering the profession. According to the NACCAS job demand survey of 2007 barbershops and salons in Pennsylvania planned on hiring over 8,700 new employees over the upcoming 12 months. In addition, 75% of Pennsylvania barbershop and salon owners who attempted to hire new employees in 2006 said they were unable to find properly-trained applicants. This means that jobs are currently available for barbershop and salon professionals. Although this survey is a bit outdated, the current economic recession adds to the attractiveness of the barber profession offering an affordable and flexible career path to those people laid off and looking for a career change. School PhilosophySince opening in April of 1979, the Barber Styling Institute has been dedicated to training students in theory and practical skills necessary to become barbers in the state of Pennsylvania. The school believes in developing the student's integrity and motivation in order for them to become successful barber-stylists. Not only do we teach the students about hair, but we want to teach them management skills to work in a barbershop, salon or own their own shop one day. Every effort is made to ensure that each student receives well-balanced training and are taught the most modern styles and techniques in the hair industry. B.S.I. Course Outline:B.S.I. follows the curriculum suggested by the State of Pennsylvania. A student must complete 1,250 hours of classroom and practical training in no less than nine months. Subjects covered include, but are not limited to:
Textbook theory is tested on a weekly basis and a licensed instructor always checks practical work on the clinic floor. Practical experience gained from the public coming to the institute for hair care services is a strong point of this course of instruction. Students receive "hands on" training, thereby putting textbook theory into practice. Course Objectives:The ultimate objective of the Barber Styling Institute is to prepare students to pass the Pennsylvania State Board Examination and have them equipped to work in a barbershop or salon.. This qualifies them to practice barbering in the state as licensed barbers. Upon graduation, students will be able to apply principles, skills, and techniques to function effectively in today's full-service salons. This requires that students be trained in the basics of every service performed in salons today. It is also our desire that students be exposed to sound business practices. | ||||||
